Catfish
Trips
Unfortunately
due to over commercial fishing on the Saône as a result of
increased gill netting rights,2002, issued by the authorities, the
catfish population has been reduced dramatically on the river.
All
of our guided and non guided trips for the cats are no longer available.
Gill
netting is a very effective way of reducing a fish population.
Since
the increase in netting on the river, we noticed considerable decline
in our catch rates in all of the sections we fished in.
The
cats would have certainly re-populated these sections within the
first year, but mainly with smaller fish, which would have been
less likely to fall victim to a gill net.
The
problem is a 100 pound catfish probably takes about 20 years to
grow to such a size in the Saône! So we have got a fair wait
until we can enjoy such amazing angling again on this river, that's
providing the netting stops?
A
classic example of how to ignorantly destroy such a natural gift
to the river.
